Help for working families in Tower Hamlets
I know that making ends meet is hard at the moment, especially for working families so I welcome new rules providing extra cash to those who need it the most. From today, changes to Government policy means that income from Child Benefit will no longer be taken into account when calculating Housing and Council Tax Benefits. This will make working families an average of £20 a week better off and ensure that families are better off in work.
I am pleased that Labour is continuing to deliver real help for working families but more needs to be done in Tower Hamlets. The unemployment rate here is still one of the highest in the UK. I am campaigning to get more resources into the area to help people get back into work.
Families in receipt of Housing or Council Tax benefits do not have to do anything to take advantage of this new help as the changes will be calculated and added to the benefit automatically.
Working families on a low income who are not currently receiving Housing or Council Tax Benefit may now be entitled. Visit the Tower Hamlets website and contact the benefits office if you would like more information.
