On 8 October 2020, Human Rights Watch published a new report on Myanmar’s mass detention of Rohingya people in Rakhine State.
The report condemned the ongoing human rights violations the Myanmar government and military have committed against the Rohingya. It found that the detention of 130,000 Rohingya in squalid camps amounts to the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution.
Human Rights Watch called for the Myanmar government to urgently end the arbitrary and indefinite detention of the Rohingya in these camps.
Rushanara Ali MP said:
“The Rohingya are one of the world’s most persecuted minority groups. They have suffered systematic discrimination and human rights atrocities at the hand of the Myanmar government for decades.
This report confirms that the Myanmar government have and will continue to act with impunity.
The international community must take immediate action, both to protect the Rohingya who remain in Myanmar and ensure the Myanmar government is held to account for the atrocities it is has committed.”
