“I condemn this appalling arson attack on a former synagogue in Nelson Street in my constituency. This part of the East End has strong historic ties to Britain’s Jewish community. My thoughts are with my Jewish constituents, who are very concerned by this attack which follows a series of attacks targeting Jewish communities.

The Nelson Street synagogue is minutes away from Cable Street where almost 90 years ago the Jewish community with so many others in the East End came together and stood against Mosley’s fascists in the Battle of Cable Street. We owe so much to that generation. It is heartbreaking that antisemitism and racism is on the rise. This attack is an attack on all of us. We have always come together to fight hate and to promote unity, and this time, it must be no different.

I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of more funding for security. This builds on £73.4 million in government funding for protective security for Jewish, Muslim and other faith sites.

But greater security deals only with the immediate threat, not the underlying causes of antisemitism and racism. I stand with all those fighting antisemitism and hate in our community, our city and across our country. I appeal to anyone with information about this incident to contact the police.”
