Statement on the Prime Minister’s resignation
I’ve known Keir Starmer for over a decade. I’m saddened that his Premiership has ended in this way. His decision to step down is testament to his character, dedication and commitment to our country and our party.
As Labour leader he took our party from the worst defeat in modern history and turned it around to deliver a landslide majority propelling our party into power after 14 years of opposition. He and we have much to be proud of.
By stabilising the economy, Labour under his leadership brought inflation and interest rates down, brought in billions of pounds of investment, cut NHS waiting lists, legislated for new rights for working people, put in record investment in social and affordable housing, introduced votes at 16, lifted over half a million children out of poverty, created Great British Energy and much more.
It is more important than ever that our whole Labour movement comes together and provides a renewed focus on delivering for the whole country and all communities. Looking ahead, we have the fight of our lives in the form of the hostility and division being sown by far right groups and parties. We must reach out to every community and every part of our country to ensure we deliver for them and see off that threat come the next general election.
